Choosing a new roof for your home is both exciting and a little overwhelming. There are many choices available and things to consider along the way. At Hinckley Roofing, we guide our customers through the process by breaking it down into manageable pieces.

Let’s start with color. For new construction or an existing home, choosing the right color roofing shingles is a decision that will improve the beauty, quality and value of your home for years to come.

The first thing to consider when looking at colors is the climate in which you live. A light colored roof will reflect the sun and keep your home cooler. A darker colored roof will absorb the heat of the sun and keep your home warmer. This can make a difference in your heating bills in the long Northeast Ohio winters.

Once you’ve decided on light or dark shingles, you then may want to consider the other elements of your home to help narrow down the choices. Coordinating with your siding, stone, stucco, or trim color is a good place to start. Some clients want to match a trim or siding color and others may want to detract from an existing element and make a bold statement with the roof color. The choice is yours and we are here to help.

We do suggest that before you go ahead and make that statement, you should check with any neighborhood association you may have. Many neighborhoods have rules in place that regulate color and style choices for your home. You may have your heart set on that bright red roof, but your particular neighborhood may not agree. You’ll want to check that out before you make any final decisions.

So if you’re thinking of a new roof this spring, deciding on color first is a perfect way to get started. And don’t be afraid. A color change may sound drastic, but even a subtle change can make a significant difference in the appearance and appeal of your home.

Something as simple as going one shade lighter or darker, or adding a fleck of a different color to the shingle can make an impact. Never underestimate the importance of curb appeal. You and your new roof will be the envy of the neighborhood.
