Whether you are a DIY weekend warrior or a professional contractor, installing a fence is not a daunting task—if you use the proper hardware when piecing together your fence. A successful installation hinges on key hardware components, so familiarize yourself with this hardware glossary and it will be easier to ask questions of your contractor or understand your fence installation instructions.

Hinges

Defined as a movable joint or mechanism on which a door or gate swings as it opens and closes, or that connects linked objects, there are couple types of hinges used for fencing.

A multi adjust hinge is one of the easiest to install, offering a range of vertical, horizontal, and tension adjustment making it ideal for your fence gate.

Butterfly hinges are called so because when fully opened their shape looks like a butterfly in flight. They can also add a decorative touch.

Latches

A bar with a catch and lever used for fastening a door or gate, latches generally consist of a bar that falls into a holder when it is closed and lifted when it is open.

These latches are general-purpose gravity latches that can range from a simple latch for a garden gate to more deluxe ones with self-locking capabilities.

There also are magna latches that are magnetically triggered so there is no jamming or sticking.

Handles

A part designed to be grasped by your hand, a gate handle is installed on all types of gates and materials to allow for convenient gate opening and closing. Usually made of strong polymer construction that resists rusting and staining, its ergonomic design can fit left-handed and right-handed opening gates.

Drop Rod Kits

Used on double gates, typically two or more guides are installed on to one gate leaf and the drop rod then slides through these guides. Depending on the weight of the gate, they come in standard and heavy duty, for both vinyl and aluminum rail fences.
